“No trauma therapy is complete without addressing the brain, mind, and body, and connecting all three.”
Rose Poney, LCMHC
I am currently licensed as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in the state of Vermont. I have been licensed since 2023. Prior to licensure I had been working as a rostered mental health worker since 2013. At that time I was also in a graduate degree program at Antioch University New England. My time at Antioch helped me build a foundation for being a counselor as well as giving me the opportunity to focus on learning about the uniqueness of mental health for military members and families. While in graduate school and beyond, I gained experience working in a number of designated agencies and community mental health programs across the state of Vermont. I have worked with a number of people from varying different backgrounds.
Throughout my career, I noticed the impact that big life events and recurring small acts of pain have on a person’s mental health. It wasn’t until later in my career that I really realized the impact that trauma can play on every day life. In 2018 I completed my first Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and after that I could not turn away from the knowledge that “the past affects the present even without being aware of it” (Shapiro, Getting Past Your Past, 2012). That training marked a significant shift in my vision of myself as well as the people I work with. Since then I have dedicated my career to working with people who have complex presentations of trauma. From that first training I continue to enhance my knowledge with trainings in Structural Dissociation Theory (SDT) treatment, as well as more recently with Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR). I have and continue to engage in consultation around the treatment of people with trauma related dissociation; as people with complex presentations can easily become overwhelmed and unmotivated to seek treatment because of negative past experiences, unintentional misunderstandings of what healing should look like, etc. I am not perfect and will not be the best fit for everyone. My goal though is to work individually with everyone to help them heal and build the life that they want, in a way that fits them.
